What is the origin of the stripper pole?

I never understood the importance of a stripper pole. Was there once a law that required exotic dancers to be in close proximity to a pole? Where did the pole originate?
No one really knows the origin of the pole dance. It has been found to be present in ancient Asia as well as the Greek and Roman cultures. The Pagans also danced fertility dances around poles… hence the more modern shunning of the pole dance and Christan repression.

In Roman times they invented the pole. They stripped the slaves who were handcuffed to the pole and made them shinny up. They found that they like to watch the women so very much.
