From what I understand of the Information provided by the site the pole is held in place by extreme spring pressure and a rubber base pad, so you are correct in that you can technically have a pole that is not physically &quot;mounted&quot;, BUT unless you can devise a way of achieving this same spring pressure and insuring that it is applied to secure areas of the ceiling and floor you should probably buy that &quot;lil mynx&quot; pole.&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;References : &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;</description>

and has to be anchored firmly at both ends.
Think of it as a lever with the whole weight of your body on it.
